Christians in the Gray (Audio Sermon)

A couple months ago, I preached a sermon in our college/young adult ministry “512″ on how we as Christians are to live in a world that passionately embraces immorality, sin, and “Gray”. Some of these thoughts were inspired by one of my pastors and friend Jordan Abina. It all started after he posted a blog called, “Should Christians Watch Paranormal Activity”, which you can read right here.

Here’s the sermon:

The Aroma

Check out this blog my good mate Trentan Kruger wrote. I got the privilege of spending 4 months on the road with Trent (as well as a bunch of other awesome people) a little over a year ago on the Australian National “Heritage Tour”. He is an extremely talented musician and more importantly an authentic man of God. I consider myself tremendously blessed to know him and have his friendship. Trent & Jordan have been touring all over the States and Australia this past year with an awesome acoustic project they started together called, “The SkyPilot” check out their Facebook Music Page here!

“Reading through 2 Corinthians 2:14-16. It displays such a cool metaphor of a person following Jesus and the impact they can have on those around them. How many times do you meet people and think “There is just something so different about them and the way they live and speak”? If we’re living in unison with the path that God is asking us to take, then everywhere we go, Paul says that we will give off the aroma of Christ, the aroma of life. That people would recognize a certain aspect of “life” through our ordinary, everyday actions. That when we walk into a coffee shop, the barista would feel that sense of life.
An aroma “redolent of life”. A presence that is associated with life. Jesus is the truth and the life.

I love the truth in verse 16, NIV says, “to the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life”. How often people are so turned off as soon as Jesus comes into the situation. As soon as confrontation arises due to the things they do, the words they speak, and when they feel the Spirit stirring their heart, a rage of anger often comes, and the person who God uses to inflict this situation becomes the “smell of death” to the other.

I hate the fact that Jesus has become one of the lowest points of conversation in the ways of this world, because of pride in the church, people whose actions contradict their words and a lack of genuine love for people. I know I’m guilty of all 3 points, and I pray that God helps me to be a better witness through learning in these experiences.

What aroma do you give off? One of pride? One of irritation to others? One of an overbearing attitude? One of life? One of death even?

It’s simple, be Jesus to people, the way that Jesus was to people! It doesn’t mean dressing in robes and sandals, it doesn’t mean over complicating his message in an already over complicated world. It simply means step up and into whatever he’s asking of you in this season. If it’s scanning groceries at the store, great! He’ll open the opportunity to spread his aroma in some way or another. If it’s serving in Cambodia with an anti-sex trafficking movement, great! If it’s owning a business in a world where morals and standards have declined dramatically in the business industry, great! If it’s singing your songs to thousands of people, great! It’s all good if God is in it, because if God is in it he’s working through it, and if he’s working through it he’s planting seed that will grow and be harvested.”

About
I am no where near perfect, but thanks to what Jesus did, I can live in the freedom of His grace. At the moment, I'm working on a worship project called, "Kingdom" with some of my best friends in the Sacramento area. Working on getting my next solo EP out sometime early 2012.
